What is a Root Canal?
Root canal procedures get their name from the area of the tooth they treat. The actual root canal is a small pathway through the tooth’s core that stores sensitive nerve tissue, which is called pulp.
Oxygen and other essential nutrients travel through this canal, so a root canal infection can cause serious damage not just to your teeth but to your general wellbeing. Infection is usually the result of bacterial buildup due to poor oral hygiene or trauma to the tooth structure.
Root Canal Infections Require Prompt Attention
As with any infection, the sooner we can identify and treat a root canal infection, the greater the likelihood of your tooth making a full recovery. If the infection goes untreated long enough, it can cause an abscess.
Abscessed teeth are incredibly painful and usually require extraction, so it’s best to come to our office as soon as you experience any type of noticeable tooth pain.
While root canal treatment procedures have a bad reputation for being painful and traumatic, that doesn’t need to be the case. At Bateman Aesthetic & Restorative Dentistry, we use cutting-edge technology and sedation dentistry to make root canal treatment and recovery as efficient and painless as possible.
How Does The Root Canal Procedure Work?
Root canal treatment involves a deep cleaning of the tooth core and the removal of any infected nerve tissue. We can locate the infected pulp and remove it quickly. We will also clean the pulp chamber and fill it with a biocompatible material to seal it against future infection.
Once the decayed pulp has been removed and the tooth is clean of any infection, we’ll insert a white filling into the tooth core. This filling helps stabilize the tooth from the inside out. Once the filling has hardened, we’ll replace the top of your tooth with one of our beautiful porcelain crowns.
We offer sedation dentistry in addition to the comforts of our office to make your root canal procedure a soothing experience rather than a nerve-wracking one. If you are still feeling uneasy, talk to us about the procedure. We are happy to answer your questions and alleviate any uneasiness.
